I Love Costco’s Kirkland Products, but These 3 Buys Were a Huge Disappointment

By Money Management No Comments

Kirkland products tend to be high in quality. But read on to see which ones you may want to steer clear of. [[{“value”:”

There’s a reason it often pays to load up on Kirkland Signature products at Costco. If you’re willing to forgo the fancy packaging other brand names are known for, you might save yourself 20% or more on your purchases.

And that 20% isn’t a made-up number. Costco’s CFO confirmed during a recent earnings call that the company seeks to offer at least 20% savings on Kirkland products compared to name-brand counterparts.

Now for the most part, I’ve had a good experience with Kirkland products. In fact, Kirkland muffins are my absolute favorite, and there are a number of Kirkland snacks that have a permanent spot in my rotation.

But certain Kirkland products haven’t worked out for me at all. Here are three I don’t think I’ll ever buy again.

1. Kirkland paper towels

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m in a place in my life where I’m passionate about paper towels. There, I said it.

Maybe it’s because I do so much darn cleaning every single day. I need a paper towel that absorbs liquid like nobody’s business. And when I tried Kirkland paper towels for the savings involved, it was a huge letdown.

I found that Kirkland’s paper towels sort of disintegrated in the face of spills. That’s the opposite of what you want a paper towel to do. So even though Bounty, my go-to brand, tends to cost a lot more, I’d rather pay extra for paper towels that actually get the job done.

2. Kirkland protein bars

When I first saw that Kirkland sold a variety pack of cookie dough and brownie protein bars, I was excited. As a busy working mom who sometimes needs a small meal or filling snack on the go, protein bars often fit the bill.

But Kirkland’s version was cloyingly sweet across both flavors. And the protein bars left an unpleasant aftertaste in my mouth each time I ate one.

Also, I don’t happen to love the fact that these bars are made with stevia. It was my fault for not reading the label before buying them, but I find that any form of sugar that isn’t actual sugar just doesn’t taste right or sit well with me. So needless to say, I won’t be buying these bars again anytime soon.

3. Kirkland rotisserie chicken

At a price point of $4.99, it’s hard to find a more affordable take-home meal than Kirkland rotisserie chicken. The problem? It just didn’t taste good. And this assessment is based on more than one experience.

Last year, there was a big uproar over Kirkland chicken having a chemical taste. Now in the interest of full disclosure, I don’t eat chicken, so I didn’t sample the Kirkland version myself. But my husband tried it more than once and felt that it was way too salty. And my son, who’s usually not picky about chicken, said there was something “off” about the taste compared to the rotisserie chickens I typically buy at the supermarket.

For this reason, I won’t buy Kirkland rotisserie chicken anymore. I love saving money, but it’s not worth forcing my family members to eat a meal they don’t enjoy.

You’re not stuck with Kirkland products that don’t meet your expectations

My experience with these three Kirkland products should not turn you off of the brand. If I were to make a list of all the Kirkland products I was happy with, you’d be reading a small book. So while you may want to stay away from Kirkland paper towels, protein bars, and rotisserie chicken, it pays to give the product line a chance on a whole, for the benefit of your budget.

And if you’re worried about being disappointed, Costco’s got you covered. Costco’s general policy is that it will give you a full refund for any item that doesn’t meet your expectations. And you can bet that it’ll especially stand behind its signature brand.

So if you try a given product that doesn’t work out, bring it back. And that includes food.

If you buy a Kirkland cake whose taste seems off, you can return it with a few slices missing and get your money back in full. Return policies really don’t get more reasonable than that.

These Are the 3 Best Reasons to Open a CD in June 2024

By Money Management No Comments

It’s a smart idea to open a CD before the month ends. Read on to see why. [[{“value”:”

At this point, June is rapidly coming to a close. But if you have some mid-year goals you’re trying to achieve, like finally cleaning out your closet, you still have an opportunity (albeit a small one) to hit them in time.

One task you may want to tackle this month is opening a CD. Here are three great reasons to move forward with one before June comes to an end.

1. You’re saving for a near-term goal and don’t want to risk losses

When you invest money, there’s always the risk of losing money. Now you can lower that risk by investing over a long period of time, which allows you to ride out market downturns.

But still, there’s no such thing as a risk-free investment. So if you’re saving for a short-term goal, then keeping your money in cash is your best bet.

Now, you could keep it in a regular savings account. But given today’s CD rates, you could earn more interest by opening a CD — so why not do that?

Also, with a CD, your interest rate is guaranteed. The rate on your savings account could change overnight, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Your bank isn’t even required to give you any advanced warning.

Most CDs hit you with a penalty for taking an early withdrawal. But that could be a good thing, as it might motivate you to leave your money alone so you’re able to meet the goal you’ve set. With a savings account, you might dip in and withdraw some of your money when temptation strikes, turning your near-term goal into a longer-term one accidentally.

2. You’re not sure what you want to do with your money

Maybe you inherited $10,000, which is the largest sum of money you’ve ever had to your name. If so, you may have no idea what to do with it. And if you need a little time to figure things out, a 3- or 6-month CD could be a good place to park your cash.

This way, you get some guaranteed interest on that money while you explore different options. You can also take your time finding a good financial advisor who can potentially help you put your money to good use.

To be clear, you may be unsure of what to do with your money even if it’s cash you’ve saved yourself. Either way, it’s OK to use CDs to bide your time, as long as you don’t do that for too long.

3. You want to lock in a great APY before rates start to fall

It’s pretty easy to find a CD paying 5% today, and some are even paying a touch more. But the reason CD rates are so strong right now is because the Federal Reserve raised interest rates multiple times in 2022 and 2023 to fight inflation.

At this point, though, the Fed is looking to cut rates. And the central bank’s first rate cut is expected to arrive at some point before the end of the year.

We don’t know exactly when it’ll happen, but we do know that the Fed is scheduled to meet again in July. So if you’re happy with today’s CD rates, you may want to lock one in before a potential rate cut leaves you with lower APYs to choose from.

You may have a number of big items to check off your to-do list before the end of June. But if these situations apply to you, opening a CD should be one of them.

5 Good Reasons for Seniors to Get a Costco Membership

By Money Management No Comments

Uncover the benefits of a Costco membership for seniors, from bulk savings to travel perks. Here’s what seniors need to know. [[{“value”:”

In 2022, 57.6 million Americans were at least 65 years old. With half of all older adults having less than $29,740 in yearly income and older households receiving less than $50,290, budgeting becomes even more essential in retirement.

Enter Costco, the superhero of savings. Whether you’re a seasoned shopper or a Costco newbie, there are plenty of perks that make a membership worthwhile, especially for seniors. Grab your oversized shopping cart, and let’s dive into why Costco is the ultimate playground for savvy seniors.

1. Bulk savings on everyday essentials

As we get older, the need to stretch our dollars becomes more crucial. Costco is a haven for bulk-buying enthusiasts, allowing seniors to save significantly on everyday essentials. Think of it as your one-stop shop for everything from paper towels to toothpaste. Buying in bulk not only reduces the number of trips you have to make to the store but also helps cut down on costs over time. Plus, with Costco’s wide aisles and ample parking, shopping becomes less of a chore and more of a leisurely outing.

While Costco doesn’t offer specific senior discounts, its already low prices on groceries and other necessities can be a boon for retirees on a budget. Whether you’re stocking up on pantry staples or treating yourself to a new TV, Costco has your back at every stage of life.

2. Access to quality health products and services

Health is wealth, especially in our golden years. Costco’s pharmacy offers competitive pricing on prescription medications, often much lower than traditional drugstores. Not only that, but the pharmacy staff are knowledgeable and ready to assist with any questions you might have about your medications.

Costco also provides a range of over-the-counter health products, from vitamins to hearing aids, all at prices that won’t break the bank. And let’s not forget the optical department, where you can get eye exams and glasses at a fraction of the cost you’d find elsewhere.

Taking care of your health has never been so convenient or affordable. For instance, you can buy optical frames at Costco for as little as $59.99 and save significantly on your prescriptions annually.

3. Delicious, affordable food options

Who doesn’t love good food? Costco is famous for its food court, which offers delicious and affordable options. Whether you’re in the mood for a hot dog combo (priced at a mere $1.50) or a slice of pizza, Costco’s food court is a treat for the taste buds and the wallet.

Beyond the food court, Costco’s grocery section is stocked with high-quality produce, meats, and prepared foods. Its rotisserie chickens are legendary, perfect for quick and easy meals. For those who love to entertain, Costco’s selection of cheeses, wines, and party platters will make you the host with the most without blowing your budget. Plus, its prepared meals, like the Kirkland Signature Italian Sausage and Beef Lasagna, offer convenience and flavor, providing several portions of delicious food that can be enjoyed over a few days.

4. Travel perks and discounts

Traveling might be on the agenda now that you have more free time, and Costco can help make your dream trips a reality. Costco Travel offers members exclusive deals on vacation packages, cruises, rental cars, and hotels. These deals are often significantly cheaper than what you’d find through traditional travel agencies or online booking sites.

Imagine booking a luxurious cruise to Alaska or a cozy getaway to the Caribbean, all at discounted rates just for being a Costco member. Plus, the travel deals often include added perks like room upgrades, food and beverage credits, or even additional excursions, ensuring you get the value from your bucket list adventures.

5. A wide range of services for convenience

The older we get, the less we want to deal with problems. A membership grants you access to various services that can simplify your day-to-day routine. Need new tires? Costco’s tire center offers competitive prices and top-notch service. Looking to update your kitchen? Costco’s home improvement services, from cabinets to countertops, provide quality options at reasonable prices.

For those tech-savvy seniors, Costco’s electronics department offers everything from TVs to laptops, with excellent warranty options and tech support services. Costco’s concierge services can assist with setting up and troubleshooting your new devices, ensuring you stay connected and entertained without hassle. And if you’re thinking about redoing your bathroom, the Jacuzzi Bath Remodel service offers a 10% Costco Shop Card on qualifying purchases, adding value and convenience to your home upgrades.

Not only will you be saving money and stocking up on essentials as a senior Costco member, but you’ll also be embarking on a series of mini-adventures every time you visit. Plus, where else can you get a hot dog and soda for less than the cost of a cup of coffee?

Costco isn’t just a store; it’s a lifestyle. Dust off your membership card, or better yet, sign up for one, and get ready to experience the joys of Costco. Your personal finances — and your taste buds — will thank you.

Here Are the Top 10 Cities Where You Might Want Airline Status in Summer 2024

By Money Management No Comments

Did you know that airlines are cutting back on seats in 2024? Fewer planes might be flying to your city. See why elite status and credit cards can help. [[{“value”:”

Air travel has been through a lot of turbulent times in the past few years — from the pandemic shutdowns and border closures, to post-pandemic “revenge travel” and soaring demand for airline tickets. But now the airlines are trying to find a new normal and adjust to customer demand. A new study from Bloomberg shows that for summer 2024, many U.S. airlines are cutting capacity — reducing the number of available seats and flights on airline routes.

When airlines cut capacity, fewer flights are available per day out of a particular airport. That means airfare prices might go up — and perks and upgrades might get more expensive. This makes having elite airline status more valuable, since it can be easier to get upgrades on scarcer flights.

Featured offer: save money while you pay off debt with one of these top-rated balance transfer credit cards

Let’s look at the cities where elite airline status might mean the most in summer 2024 — and how you can adjust your travel plans.

Where airlines are cutting capacity the most in summer 2024

A recently published study in Bloomberg found that airlines have reduced U.S. capacity by about 6.2 million seats for June-August 2024. And some cities — mostly in the South and Southeast — are getting hit the hardest.

Here are a few of the cities that have seen the biggest reduction in airline seats for June-August 2024:

Rank City Reduction in Scheduled Airline Seats (June-August 2024) 1 Jackson, Mississippi 17.9% 2 Columbia, South Carolina 13.8% 3 Greensboro, North Carolina 11.8% 4 Lexington, Kentucky 9.5% 5 Huntsville, Alabama 9.3% 6 Atlantic City, New Jersey 7.7% 7 Greenville, South Carolina 7.4% 8 McAllen, Texas 7.4% 9 Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 7.0% 10 Little Rock, Arkansas 6.4%
Data source: Author’s analysis of Bloomberg survey data

Although the biggest airline capacity cuts are happening in smaller cities, larger airports are also being affected. Bloomberg’s research found that Delta Air Lines has cut 580,000 seats from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Routes between New York and Miami have also seen big reductions in capacity.

Why is this trend important for airline credit card customers?

On one hand, the 2024 summer reduction in airline seats is not terrible news for airline customers. Airline prices have not gone up; the airlines seem to be trying to better align their available planes with the routes that have the highest demand. Airline ticket prices are actually going down in summer 2024. Bloomberg cited data from Hopper which found that the average domestic U.S. airfare for summer 2024 is about $305 — down from $324 in summer 2023.

But if you have elite status, travel credit card points, or extra frequent flyer miles, you might want to use them for summer 2024 travel from these lower-capacity cities. Upgrades might get scarcer or become more expensive. If you’re flying in or out of any of the smaller cities on the top 10 list shown above, having the best airline credit cards or elite status perks might help you get a better seat in summer 2024.

Bottom line

When airlines cut capacity, there are fewer planes flying and fewer available seats. This could make business-class upgrades and other in-flight perks a little more expensive and hard to find. For those reasons, having elite airline status could make a bigger difference in some of the cities that have seen the biggest cutbacks in available airline seats for summer 2024. The best airline credit cards can also give you a free checked bag to free up legroom on the plane.
